Advertising on the Internet
This site deals primarily with UK opportunities, although some may also be available in other countries. If you are based outside the UK, please click here for the international site.

When Make Your Site SELL! launched in 1999, it was instantly coined "The BIBLE of selling on the Net." Unlike other Internet marketing books that have swept the Net since then and unlike the latest/greatest "hype of the day", this one cost all of $17 and overdelivered at that remarkably low price. This philosophy (underprice and overdeliver) is the foundation of SiteSell.com and they've grown into a company that overdelivers business success through its flagship product, Site Build It!...
In 2002, MYSS! received a major overhaul and re-launched with 7 volumes stuffed with even more success-proven strategies - ideal for anyone wanting to join the 1% who know how to sell on the Net. The price? It went all the way up to... $29.95.
Whilst MYSS! remains a great read, full of useful, evergreen ideas and information, it hasn't been updated since that date and now rather than publishing a new edition, they've decided to offer all 7 volumes completely free of charge. Get your copy from http://myss.sitesell.com/websuccessstory.html
The beauty of the Internet is that it is now possible to reach people around the world, or in the next street, extremely cheaply and competing on equal terms with much larger companies.
To get the most out of the Internet, you should consider getting your own website, or at least a page on somebody else's website. They needn't cost anything, at least while you're starting out, and many of the free sites require no experience at all to get a site up and running.
You can also place advertisements on ad pages on the web, often for free, but you must have at least a contact e-mail address if you don't have a webpage to direct people towards.
Don't underestimate the importance of the wording you use. One book stands out amongst the hundreds of books ever written on copywriting. "Make Your Words Sell" is all you'll ever need to write order-generating, lead-getting, sales-clinching words. For instance you will learn...
- How to write an order page that just refuses to be ignored
- An effective-but-underused method of preventing "Buyer's Remorse"... and canceled orders
- How a simple two line e-mail can work wonders for your profits
- Techniques that ensure your visitors read your entire message
- The single best way to increase your follow-up sales
- Common mistakes that kill sales day after day, mistakes made even by the pros.
It does way more than show how powerful persuasive Net copy should be written.
And it does much, much more than just show you how to think like a successful Web copywriter. It shows you how to think like your customer, with your customer and ahead of your customer. And...
Not just any customer... your specific customer. Right from the very first moment (before, actually!) he or she enters your site, all the way through to the climax of taking the order... and the vital follow-up.
Step by careful step, word by word, paragraph by paragraph, and page by perfectly crafted page, Make Your Words Sell! transforms you into the consummate copywriter who knows how to write to sell.

The biggest misconception however is that you need only build a website and orders will flood in. Like anything else, people will only find your website if they're told about it.
Imagine getting a new telephone installed and telling no-one the number. It won't ring. You start by telling people, you put the number in the phone directory and you print the details on all your stationery, advertising and literature. It's exactly the same with a website.
Depending on your available funds and degree of professionalism required, you can either start with a free web site or purchase your own domain and get a company to host it for you. Visit this section for advice and a selection of recommended products and services
Throughout the site I've frequently mentioned the benefits of creating your own website, either to publicise your own business or simply as a business in its own right. I know many of you have been put off by the idea that it is just too complicated or expensive, but I think I may have finally found the answer. The Newbie Club has produced "First Website Builder". This package is a series of 4 e-books, the first of which is written by a complete novice who built a site, completely free, in two days.
In line with all the packages I've recommended in the past, this is another one worth way in excess of the asking price of $29.95 and comes with a no strings, no questions asked, 1 year money back guarantee.

If you want people to be able to find your site, you must be listed with the top search engines. You can either go to each search engine individually or you can use special software or get it done for you. Visit this section for details of the most important search engines and recommended software and services, together with information on optimising your position with the search engines.
Obviously everybody can't be top of the search engines but luckily there are many others ways to get people to your site. This section shows you a range of both free and paid options for guaranteeing new visitors.
Visit this section for details on newsletters, UK classified ads, swapping links and more.
If you have something to sell on the Internet, there are two major ways of increasing your sales for little effort:
- Accept credit cards
- Offer an affiliate program so that others do the work and get paid only on results.
Visit this page for details of some of the best options around.
There's little point having a website and spending hours promoting it if you don't know whether anyone is visiting your site and where they're coming from. If your own webhost doesn't supply you with this information, there are many companies that supply this information for free, or low cost. A few of the best are listed here.
